Part III- Chapters 23-38: Question 37

Research the laws and the ethical debate over offering payment in exchange for participation in scientific studies, or for the donation of blood, eggs, sperm, or other biological materials. Do people have a right to “sell”their body, tissues, or organs if they wish?

  1. To a certain extent, offering money to people for human experimenting, is bribing. This action was abused many times by the United States. Many unethical human experiments caused the questioning in whether clinical trials are worthy of being legal. In 1946 to 1948, an important event causing the questioning of clinical trials and human experimenting took place; The Guatemala syphilis experiment was the “American research project... [is] known for its unethical experimentation on vulnerable human populations in Guatemala. The intent of the study was to test the value of different medications, including the antibiotic penicillin and the arsenical agent orvus-mapharsen, in the prevention of symptom emergence following infection with certain sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)” (Rogers). This experiment was the mark of the unethical use of the scientific method and also brought shame to the medical field because of the intentional use of unjust experimenting. The WMA Declaration of Helsinki - Ethical Principles for Medical Research Involving Human Subjects was passed in 2002, setting rules for ethics and morals to be taken into consideration when preforming clinical trials and experimenting on a live human body with the consent of the human subject, stating that they will serve in an experiment for the advancement of science (WMA). Since this law of the ethics and morals was passed, the weight of experimenting on human subjects is now held with in the hand of the actual subject, meaning that every right and freedom is given to the subject when deciding whether to participate in the current experiment/clinical trial.

  2. Every organ and tissue in the body is sacred. God gave us these things, but it does not mean that we can abuse our rights!
